The teacup version of the English Bulldog is getting just as popular as the original, with some owners wondering just how big are teacup Bulldogs full grown? These pups are essentially just a sized-down version of the original English Bulldog, and in today’s article, we’ll be learning just how big (or small) they really are, along with some other things!
Teacup Bulldog Size
This is obviously the make-or-break point for some owners, as their size makes them even more appealing. A teacup bulldog that’s fully grown is about 14 inches tall, but some can be as tiny as 10 inches. Your run-of-the-mill English Bulldog is usually about 16 inches tall, with some being even taller. Therefore, the teacup version is noticeably smaller – but it’s definitely not tiny.
They can also weigh up to 40 pounds. Even though the dogs that are healthy weigh about 25 to 30 pounds, these dogs are prone to obesity. The English Bulldog, on the other hand, weighs much more – about 55 pounds. Therefore, these teacup Bulldogs are a bit shorter, but usually a lot lighter than their full-sized big brothers and sisters!
Teacup Bulldog Health
Unfortunately, as is with all Bulldogs, teacup Bulldogs have major breathing problems from the start until the end of their lives. Just like English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs, teacup English Bulldogs are brachycephalic. That means that their respiratory system is completely anatomically incorrect.
This condition creates a lot of breathing problems for them, sometimes up to the point where they start choking for no reason. All of this might sound scary, but it’s important for you to know that if you’re thinking about buying one of these dogs.
Essentially – they can’t breathe enough air in, meaning that they’re often tired. They also literally can’t power physical activities because of the lack of air, so they’re not the biggest fans of physical activities. When they do heat up, be it from physical activity or just because it’s hot outside, they can’t cool down. This causes heart problems, possibly even heart failure.
Their brachycephalic condition affects their skeleton too – sometimes causing arthritis. Obesity is another issue – since these dogs don’t move too much, they don’t burn calories. It’s very easy for them to put on excess weight! However, as we can see from the comparison of the teacup and the standard Bulldog – teacup versions are usually less obese.
Regarding their age, there’s no defined number since these dogs are an unofficial breed. However, according to experienced owners, they can live up to 14 years. This mostly depends on their health, though.
Appearance And Maintenance
There are virtually no differences between the English Bulldog and the teacup English Bulldogs. Aside from the size – these dogs are identical. The same smushy face and wrinkles – only smaller.
What you’ll notice is that the teacup Bulldog is much thinner – these dogs don’t weigh as much in comparison to the standard English Bulldogs.
When it comes to maintenance and care, they need a lot of it. Firstly, because of their condition, you’ll likely be visiting the vet more than other dog owners. You’ll also spend a lot of time in the tub! All Bulldogs have sensitive skin, so it’s essential to clean it often to avoid any skin infections.
It’s also best to avoid any physical activity – these dogs aren’t big on running and jumping through hoops. Taking your dog for a 15-minute walk every day should be more than enough for them. What they do like is socializing! They love spending time with people, children, and other dogs. This is another quality shared by all Bulldogs.
Vets also remind us that sticking to a strict diet is essential with Bulldogs! Since these pups are so prone to obesity, keeping a strict and healthy diet regime can fight that very effectively! Remember that these dogs will eat until they throw up if you let them, which is why you should often weigh them and adjust their diet accordingly!
History And Price
There are essentially two theories to their existence. The first one says that this dog was developed in the 1980s when breeders tried to breed the English Bulldog and the Pug in an attempt to create a healthier dog, but they only created a smaller version of the English Bulldog.
The second theory states that breeders just selectively bred smaller English Bulldogs until they formed a fixed bloodline of small Bulldogs.
Either way, these dogs are popular because of their size specific, but they can be difficult to find. Because of this, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that they can cost up to $4,500! There aren’t many breeders that breed teacup English Bulldogs!
Teacup Bulldogs also aren’t recognized by the AKC. The organization only recognizes English Bulldogs. Additionally, since teacup Bulldogs don’t fit the size proportions, they’re usually not allowed to compete in dog shows. This is something you have to keep in mind if you’re thinking about competing in shows.
To End
Teacup Bulldogs, although not yet recognized by the AKC and being an unofficial breed, are certainly a breed in ascension. They’re becoming more and more popular because of their size. Their size is the main difference between them and the standard English Bulldog. They’re usually 10-14 inches tall and can weigh up to 40 pounds.
Except for their size, they’re completely identical to standard English Bulldogs. They can live up to 14 years, but it’s important to keep track of their weight and their diet. These pups are susceptible to many illnesses because of their brachycephalic condition!
